1 Year After the Tornado
Many residents have expressed frustration over the lack of response from the City of St. Louis after the May 16th tornado, which was on public display at mayor Cara Spencer’s State of the City Address earlier this year, while the Mayor’s Office also makes promises for new recovery efforts.
Pre-Tornado Inequities in North City
This segment from A Tale of Two River Cities: Lessons from Hurricane Katrina features residents of the Academy Neighborhood whose homes were damaged from the May 16th tornado and how generations of inequities impact recovery efforts.
STL Rebuilds 1 Year Later
North City handyman Calvin Motley began helping his neighbors with tornado damage and after some viral TikToks and help of his attorney friend, Mark Timmerman, grew his efforts into the organizations STL Rebuilds.
The People’s Response 1 Year Later
Local organizations Action St. Louis and For the Culture joined forces through The People’s Response to help fill the gaps for resident services after the tornado, and now using the newly opened Northside Movement Center as a home for their growing efforts.
Recycle With Me
After the City of St. Louis paused recycling pickup to focus on tornado debris removal, services to collect residential recycling never returned, but a city resident is now offering his own service to ensure household items are kept out of the landfill.
