St. Louis, MO—November 5, 2020—Filmed outdoors without an audience in the Public Media Commons in early October, Songs for St. Louis: A Concert in the Commons is a reminder that art endures during times of upheaval, and it can inspire and offer hope. Songs for St. Louis: A Concert in the Commons premieres on Nine PBS Monday, November 16 at 7 pm.
Songs for St. Louis is a coproduction by Nine Network and Opera Theatre of Saint Louis (OTSL) and underwritten by the inaugural sponsors of OTSL’s Voices Fund: A Path to Empathy, Dialogue, and Change. Produced by Nine, three young operatic singers from OTSL’s 2020 Gerdine Young Artist Program took the stage to share the joy of making music.
“The production captures the beauty of the human voice and reminds us of the power of music to inspire and bring us together,” says Andrew Jorgensen, General Director, OTSL. “It is the perfect collaboration for us to be able to come together to celebrate our work and to share the adaptation, power, and persistence of music even during incredibly challenging times.”
The songs in the program range from great aria classics of the operatic canon to American musical theater, including pieces composed by Mozart, Puccini, Gershwin, Bernstein, and songs from La bohème, Rigoletto, Camelot, South Pacific, and West Side Story.
The young artists include Angel Riley, an emerging soprano, who hails from Belleville, IL, Ganson Salmon, a lyric tenor, and Christopher Humbert, a bass-baritone. Sandra Geary accompanied the performers.
