Anheuser-Busch's New Barley Protein Facility | Living St. Louis

Email share

When you hear Anheuser-Busch, you probably don’t think of a healthy, high- protein diet, but that’s exactly what AB’s newest venture, EverGrain, is tapping into. Headquartered in St. Louis, the beer maker opened the doors to this innovative barley protein production company this past summer.

This has been a decade-long process that EverGrain CEO, Greg Belt, said started with the question, “How can [Anheuser-Busch] better utilize our barley and our resources for the good of the planet and of society?”

Eventually, the team came up with a process that utilizes uses the protein from brewer- spent grains, specifically barley.  They extract, filter, and dry it into a powder. They sell the barley as an additive to companies who make plant-based foods that could use a boost of protein, such as breads, power shakes, milk, and protein bars.

Choosing St. Louis and the historic brewery location was an obvious choice for EverGain’s headquarters. Brendan Whitworth, CEO of Anheuser-Busch, says “EverGrain is one of the standout examples of this commitment, helping achieve a more sustainable food chain, while making a major impact through job creation and investment in St. Louis.”

One part of the factory, built in 1905, has been renovated after being vacant for nearly 60 years. Another brand-new building in the facility was constructed  in 2022.

EverGrain will provide 50 high-paying jobs to St. Louis. Belt says that “it’s only fitting that St. Louis remain on the cutting edge of innovation and produce the world’s first barley protein isolate and the world's only upcycled certified protein available at scale today. EverGrain is very, very proud to call St. Louis home.”.
